Mental Health and Deaf Awareness (2 days)

This event - divided into two parts - aims to raise the awareness of qualified BSL Interpreters who want to specialise in the field of mental health and deafness. (Please note: Day 1 is open to participants training to become interpreters).

Day 1: Sessions include:<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
· What is Mental Health? A look at the causes of Mental Health problems and how they occur in Deaf people;
· The Deaf person’s journey;
· The Services available: both general and specialist Deaf;
· Deaf Professionals in Mental Health;
· Meetings in Mental Health, tribunals and Mental Health Sections.
· Where does the interpreter fit in?
· Group Work: at what stage does the Interpreter enter the Deaf person’s journey?
· Emotional impact on the Interpreter: briefing /debriefing, mentoring and therapy;
· Coping Strategies and skills;
· The Code of Practice and other resources;
· Idiosyncratic language and questions.
The two days will be conducted in BSL
ASLI 16 CPD credits.
