Specialised Training
Mental Health and Deaf Awareness Workshop for Social Workers
Thursday 18 November 2010, 10am-4.00pm
Trainers: Herbert Klein and Esther Thomas
It is estimated that up to 40% of deaf and hard of hearing people experience mental health problems at some point in their lives (Hindley 1994), and face considerable barriers when seeking access to mental health care. These barriers are caused by lack of information and knowledge about deafness and its implications when assessing and treating mental health problems.
This one day event, aims to raise the awareness of professionals working in the field of mental health and deafness.
Mental Health and Deaf Awareness covers:
- What is Mental Health? A look at the causes of Mental Health problems and how they occur in Deaf people;
- The Deaf person’s journey;
- Working with BSL interpreters;
- The Services available: both general and specialist Deaf;
- Deaf Professionals in Mental Health.
