Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version
Part 2 of the Signature Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting assesses candidates on their ability to meet the Signature qualification specification and follows the training component of this programme (Part 1). This is an assessment programme for candidates who already have advanced skills in English and BSL and BSL Interpreting. This programme assesses theoretical knowledge and the ability to implement efficient interpreting techniques and obtain feedback on work performed.

The Signature qualification lists six interpreting units which are to be assessed, the first four are mandatory and candidates may choose one of the last two:
  • INT6A1 - Prepare for Sign Language Interpreting assignments
  • INT6B1 - Interpret one-way as a professional Sign Language Interpreter
  • INT6C1 - Interpret two-way as a professional Sign Language Interpreter
  • INT6D1 - Develop your performance as a Sign Language Interpreter
  • INT6E1 - Support Sign Language Interpreting through sight translations of routine written documents
  • INT6G - Work with other Sign Language Interpreters

First candidates are required to attend our intensive two-day pre-assessment. Here, candidates complete various tasks to determine their eligibility to participate in the assessment programme and they receive a comprehensive feedback report on a separate day. Please note that a separate charge for this component applies. However, should candidates be accepted onto the programme they will be able to use the clips filmed at the pre-assessment as evidence towards their portfolio if it meets the standard.

Candidates who have been accepted onto the programme will attend induction days in a two-day block. During induction candidates obtain a full understanding of the NVQ procedure including appeals, filming and paperwork requirements, and plan how best to collect their evidence. Candidates are allocated an assessor and are given 15 hours of tutorials to get feedback and their support for the clips, the total number of required clips is ten. Over the course of the programme, two-day blocks once every six weeks have been arranged and candidates are required to attend three hours of tutorial time per month, until they have completed their portfolio. Additionally, candidates may arrange to liaise with their allocated assessor outside of the formal sessions. This comes out of the allocated 15 hours of tutorial time. Candidates are also welcome to use Signamic premises on advertised course dates outside of their tutorial time to collect evidence and discuss portfolios with other candidates.

During these monthly blocks the following will be provided: tutorials, workshops and evidence collection opportunities (after the second and third tutorial). This provides candidates with an excellent opportunity to share their experiences with other candidates. The IV will be available to provide additional support and to ensure that all required procedures are adhered to.
