Part 2 of the Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in BSL assesses candidates on their ability to meet the Signature qualification specification and follows the training component of this programme (Part 1).

Candidates will be assessed on their ability to extract and communicate complex information from a wide range of sources, even at speed, with occasional inaccuracy which they are able to correct. Candidates will also be assessed on their familiarity with a range of regional variations, formal and informal language, relevant technical vocabulary and colloquialisms. Also candidates be assessed on their ability to participate in negotiations, dealing with complaints, problems or disputes. We will also assess skills relating to making effective use of the telephone/videophone and web-based live communications. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to discuss all topics within their field, even when abstract or complex, and keep conversation going smoothly. Language skills used to enhance relationships with individuals and groups will be assessed also.

The programme consists of 2 units: Units BSL601 – receptive skills and BSL602 – productive skills. This follows the Part 1 of the Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in BSL and adheres to the Signature qualification specification. You can view this on www.signature.org.uk under Qualification Specification or download the information pack below for more details.

There will be a preliminary half-day interview to determine candidates’ eligibility to participate in the assessment programme. Once candidates have been accepted onto the course, they will be required to attend two consecutive induction days and a one-day workshop where they will gain a full understanding of NVQ procedures and requirements, learn all about the portfolio and what evidence is required.

Following this, candidates will then be required to attend four two-hour tutorials over four months on one of the two monthly course dates. This means that they will meet with their assessor to get feedback and support for their clips. Participation in these tutorials should be sufficient to complete all portfolio requirements, however, if candidates require additional time to complete their portfolio they will be able to arrange extra sessions with their assessor. Candidates are also welcome to use Signamic premises during course times outside of their allocated tutorial time to film evidence. Signamic will arrange suitable role models to be present on these days for evidence collection. Candidates are also welcome to film with classmates. The total number of required clips is eight, half of which will be will be arranged by Signamic. At the beginning of the programme candidates will be provided with a simple and easy-to-use blank portfolio to complete.
