Part 1 of the Signature Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation prepares students for the assessment component of the programme (Part 2). This is a training course designed by Signamic and which has been closely mapped to the qualification specification for students who already have advanced knowledge of both English and BSL, so students will develop all the skills and knowledge required to commence to Part 2 of the programme.

This course provides you with theoretical knowledge and gives you the opportunity to try out new translation techniques in a safe environment and obtain feedback on your work. The course content is based on the translation qualification specification and prepares you for the relevant Signature Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation assessment programme, which consists of 5 compulsory units:

PTra1 - Maintain skills and systems for managing translation tasks
PTra2 - Manage new translation assignments
PTra3 - Translate written texts from one language into another
PTra4 - Develop your performance as a professional translator
E1 - Sight Translation

Theoretical aspects of translation will be taught, and alongside this practical sessions will be conducted to reinforce newly-gained knowledge. Students will be given assignments to complete on topics such as developing systems and techniques as a translator, receiving and preparing for an assignment, translation theory, working with peer translators, obtaining feedback and developing self-evaluation techniques.
The main themes, which the course covers, are:
  • Developing and maintaining translation systems i.e. research, technology, quality assurance
  • Professionalism and ethics
  • Preparation
  • Exploring translation skills
  • Actual translation practice using an autocue

  • Looking after yourself as a Professional Translator.
The course is classroom based and the teaching team is made up a group of qualified experienced MRSLIs, MRSLTs, deaf professionals and professional trainers. The course uses a variety of teaching methods including group and pair work activities, role play and simulations, demonstrations, discussions, PowerPoint presentations, video, translation exercises and practicals using modern technology.
